Alhaji Mumuni, Hannah Tetteh to Drag AFAG to Court
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 4, Ghanadot - The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) yesterday at a press conference leveled criminal charges on the head of Muhammad Mumuni after the Auditor-General had investigated some decisions taken by him when he was Minister of Employment and Social Welfare.

According to AFAG, “It is remarkable that those findings were to the effect that through the gross negligence of Alhaji Mumuni, the state had lost a colossal 15 billion old cedis through his involvement with the NVTI alone; further Alhaji Mumuni was found to have authorised the fraudulent releases of amounts in excess of 19 billion cedis from the Consolidated Fund.”

Alhaji Mumuni has debunked the charges leveled against him saying the matter was in court, thus there was no need for him to comment on the charge.

Alhaji Mumuni who is to appear before the Parliamentary Vetting Committee this coming Friday reiterated that there was no way he would be in danger of being disqualified following a petition filed against him by the pressure group.

“This matter is pending in court, and the rules are that when a matter is pending in court we should not comment on it, particularly in such a way that it will pre-empt the court and that amounts to contempt of court.

“This matter has being in court since 2004 and information came out that Audit body have published a draft report that made certain allegations against me. I sued Daily Guide editor Gina Blay, I sued Western Publications, publishers of the paper and I sued the auditors, Bafuor Ewuah and Associates in the High Court”.

According to him, he did not understand the reason why Mr. Godfred Dame could call a press conference over an issue which was still in court, knowing well the consequences, and that the report that he (Mr. Dame) was talking about, was rejected in court for lack of evidence.

“I have spent 34 years at the BAR and I have never come across a situation where a lawyer in a case will also go and hold a press conference on the same subject matter that is pending in court”.

Alhaji Mumuni was optimistic that even if the case in court was not ruled in his favour, he would still be elected by Parliament, due to the evidence he will present to them to declare him fit for the position.

“We have judicial system that allows for appeal when you are not satisfied or aggrieved in a particular ruling so at the end of the day when judgment goes which ever way, the person who will be aggrieved is entitled to climb higher.

“In Parliament there are people of integrity, some of them are lawyers and others even seasoned lawyers, they understand issues clearly.  I will draw their attention to the matter and if I am able to satisfy them that indeed the case is pending in court, I know they will understand”.

Meanwhile, the Trade and Industry Minister-designate, Ms Hannah Tetteh, has threatened court action against the same group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), for accusing her for holding on to her full-time employment at the Ghana Agro Food Company (GAFCO) at a time she was a sitting Parliamentarian.

The rest of the ministerial nominees on whom the searchlight has been put are Ms. Sherry Ayittey, nominee for the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu.

Thinking Chinese food for dinner?

Feature, Feb 5, Ghanadot - I am not sure about the real origin of operators of Chinese restaurants in Ghana.
