More Internet fraudsters, 'Sakawa' boys arrested
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, April 11, Ghanadot - A group of suspected ‘sakawa’ boys have been arrested by the Ghana Police at Mambo, a suburb of Greater Accra, following a tip off by some residents.

According to sources, upon the arrest of the gentlemen, coffins and gallons full of blood and a girl of about seven (7) years old who had her mouth sealed with cello tape was found in the room suspected to be the hideout of the gang.

The Internet serves as useful tool for business and an excellent tool for investors, allowing them to easily and inexpensively research investment opportunities. But the Internet is also an excellent tool for fraudsters.

Internet fraud can be perpetrated from anywhere in the world. In some cases Internet Fraud schemes originate in the US and European countries, but a significant proportion seems to come from Africa, particularly Nigeria, and sometimes from Ghana and Egypt.

Some originate in Eastern Europe, Southwest Asia and China. For some reason, many fraudulent orders seem to originate from Belgium, from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, from Norway, and from Malmö in Sweden. Europe and the US are the leading targets of this type of fraud.

Fraudsters seem to prefer small and valuable products, such as: watches, jewelry, laptops, digital cameras, and camcorders. These items are usually commodities that are easily sellable and have a broad range of appeal.

However, fraud in hosted marketplaces such as EBay covers a broad range of products from cellular phones to desktop computers. The craft has continually evolved in sophistication. In some instances, a picture of the product is sent in place of the actual product. Other times, products are outright never sent after the bill is charged to credit card accounts. Victims are left to deal with credit card companies for charge backs.

Most Internet fraud is done through the use of stolen credit card information which is obtained in many ways, the simplest being copying information from retailers, either online or offline.
