Report on Ministry of Foreign
Affairs fire outbreak out, but rules out foul
play

The committee that investigated the fire
that destroyed the Foreign Affairs Ministry
in October has ruled out arson.
A day after the disaster, the Greater Accra
Regional Police Commander, Rose Atinga-Bio
gave indications there was foul play
relating to the cause of the fire.
But her suggestions, according to a report
submitted by the seven-member committee have
not been supported by the facts.
It said the fire was started by an
electrical fault.
The committee, chaired by Mr Kwaku Twum
Boafoh, has recommended that the remaining
structure be pulled down.
Receiving the report, the Vice-president, Mr
John Dramani Mahama, gave the assurance that
the lessons learnt in that incident were not
lost on the government.
He said the government was committed to
adequately equipping the National Fire
Service to enable the service effectively
fight such disasters.
The vice-president said if the fire had
started at a time when workers of the
ministry were in the office, it would have
been difficult if not impossible to rescue
them.
Currently, the ministry is operating from
temporary offices in the Jubilee House.
