Tourism Minister launches Ghana Fashion Weekend 2009
By Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, April 17, Ghanadot - The Minister of Tourism, Mrs Juliana Azumah Mensah has launched the Ghana Fashion Weekend 2009 in Accra and has called on stakeholders in the fashion industry to incorporate traditional ideals in their designs.

The four-day fashion show which is expected to be a blend of modelling shows and fashion exhibitions will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre from July 1 to 4, 2009 and will be on theme "Harnessing Creative Talents Within Africa".

The show which is organised by Exopa Model Agency International is expected to bring together different designers from within Africa, Europe and America and has the aim of giving exposure to unknown fashion designers.

Speaking at the launch of the fashion show, Mrs Azumah Mensah said there were unique items in the Ghanaian culture such as fabrics, music and designs that had to be identified and included in the country's tourist attraction list.

She said, it was by incorporating traditional ideals in design products that the theme on this year's event could become meaningful.

She added that, it was unfortunate that the desire to chase after anything foreign had contributed to the poor state of the local tourism.

"Our tourist industries and other local industries can not be sustained if we fail to appreciate the unique value of our traditions and continue to copy and desire only foreign ideas", she said.

The Tourism Minister however expressed the hope that the fashion weekend show would go a long way to unearth talents, boost interest and attract massive investment into the fashion sector, both in Ghana and the rest of Africa.

The event will feature 30 designers including 10 of Ghana's most celebrated ones and upcoming ones from Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Senegal, Rwanda, Cote D'voire and United Kingdom.
