Accra, May 1, Ghanadot - Mr Samuel
Ofosu Ampofo, the Eastern Regional Minister has noted that,
democracy in Ghana is best practised at the local level than the
national level.
He said, at the local level, the people are directly involved in
the decision making process and whatever decision they take
affect them directly.
"That is why they sometimes agitate over some of the appointees
as metropolitan, municipal and district chief executive and it
is because they want the right people to lead them. But when a
Minister is appointed you hardly hear some agitations from the
general public", he noted.
He intimated that, it therefore behoves on the appointed MMDCE
to work according the wishes of the people at the local level to
promote development.
The Eastern Regional Minister said this at Nkawkaw in the
Eastern Region when the Assembly members confirmed the President
nominee, Mr Alex Obeng Somuah as the Municipal Chief Executive
for Kwahu West Assembly. Twenty eight (28) assembly members cast
their votes to confirmed the President nominee and he recieved
100 per cent of the vote as all of them voted in his favour.
The Eastern Regional Minister however bemoans the low level
development at the Kwahu West Municipality. He revealed that,
the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly had been existing for the past
five years but had nothing to show in terms of development.
This he said was irrespective of the common fund available to
the assembly to execute developmental projects.
According him, the assembly has no official bungalow for the
municipal chief executive and the coordinating director and had
to rent apartment for them.
"After five years of no development to show, there should be a
probe to unearthed what has prevented developments in this
municipality", he suggested.
Mr Ofosu Ampofo has therefore urged the newly elected MCE to
work towards developing the area to the status of a
municipality.
In a related development, assembly members at Kwahu-Abetifi in
the Kwahu East District had finally confirmed Mr Somuah Samuel
as its District Chief Executive. This was after 20 out of 25
assembly members had voted in his favour.
It was however contrary to the first voting when he attained 14
out of the 25 votes cast and therefore disapproved him.
