Oil find must benefit People of Western Region, Chiefs
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, July 29, Ghanadot The President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Awulae Atibrukusu III has call on the Attah Mills administration to ensure that the oil find in the region is beneficial to the people of the region.

The chief who was speaking on behalf of the chiefs in the region made this remark yesterday during a durbar of chiefs to welcome President Mills who was on a two-day tour in the region.

He called for the establishment of a special oil development fund in which part of the revenue from the oil resources would be allocated to fast track the development of the region, including the creation of alternative sources of livelihood for the people.

Nana Atibrukusu III said the chiefs in the region have resolved to do everything possible to ensure that the oil find did not become a curse to them.

"We strongly believe the oil find will be a blessing and not a curse", he stressed.

But President Mills who was addressing the gathering amidst cheering reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the oil resources were used to the benefit of the country.

He said, development of the Western Region which hosts a number of the country's vital natural resources was prominent on the government development agenda, adding, "We will not turn our back on you".

President Mills announced that his administration would soon set up a Western Corridor Development Authority to help develop the Western Region and Central Region.

President Mills yesterday arrived in Secondi-Takoradi, the Western Regional capital, to a huge welcome by thousands of jubilant residents. The President is on a two-day tour of the region, his first after ascending the Presidency in January this year.
