AN EVENING OF HONOR FOR H.E. ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF AND THE AFRICA PRIZE
Kobina Annan, J
r.

On October 21, 2006 President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was honored with The Africa Prize. The prize is awarded by the Hunger Project, a global non-profit strategic organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger.

The Africa Prize was established in 1987 as a strategic intervention to call forth effective and committed leadership within Africa for the well-being of Africa’s people. Past laureates include heads of state such as Nelson Mandela, as well as educators, scientists, women’s activists and grassroots organizers.

President Sirleaf was joined on stage with the President of the Hunger Project Mrs. Joan Holmes.

With a look of appreciation and humility, dressed in her native attire with her hair wrapped, President Sirleaf addressed issues of poverty and health to the audience at the soft-lit hall of the Hilton Hotel in New York.

In her speech, President Sirleaf gave recognition to those who want to help eradicate hunger. Sirleaf said: “I am most grateful to be honored today as recipient of the Africa Prize for Leadership by the Hunger Project. Indeed, I am extremely honored to join the ranks of the sterling group of persons who have received this award including heads of states such as Nelson Mandela. I want to applaud The Hunger Project for its unswerving and unwavering dedication to ending world hunger, and lasting improvements in health.”

Hunger in Africa has become a global concern. The inability of Africa to grow itself out of poverty is the major cause of hunger in Africa. According to USAID, one out of every three people in Africa can be classified as undernourished.

Continuing her speech, President Sirleaf said, “I am convinced that the effective leadership to end hunger which is gaining momentum throughout Africa and rest of the world will demonstrate the commitment and dedication of governments and organizations such as the Hunger Project, in meeting the needs and aspirations of all people for a better quality of life. I am convinced that the leadership in Liberia today will go a long way in achieving these goals.”

Along with Wangari Maathai Of Kenya, Graca Machel of Mozambique and Ester Ocloo of Ghana, President Sirreaf and these famous women are among the few in Africa who have been recognized for the award of the “Africa Prize for Leadership for the Sustainable End of Hunger.”

For her part, President Sirleaf made her presence felt in the hall at the Hilton Hotel during the award. She happened to be the first elected female to a presidency in Africa on a stage in New York, facing a world audience. And the audience of some 1200 persons at the Hilton Hotel hall was enthralled by her speech. As some said, the strong and respectful manner of her speech convinced them that there was some positive change in the offing for Liberia.

President Sirleaf was elected president of Liberia on November 23, 2005. Her election ended a decade and half of turbulent history for Liberia, starting with the coup of Master Sergeant Doe in 1980
