Goal.com chooses Essien as World Best Player of the week
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Sept 10, Ghanadot - Goal.com a renowned sports website in the world has picked Ghana's Micheal Essien as the World Best Player for the week. This was as a result of the splendid performance put up by Micheal Essien to qualify Ghana to the World Cup in South Africa after defeating Sudan in Accra over the weekend.

This is how the citation published on the website of Goal.com goes.
"Goal.com's 17th World Player of the Week is generally more recognised on the club stage than the national one, but this week he's a true Ghanaian hero.

The Chelsea midfielder lined up for the Black Stars of Ghana in Accra knowing that a win could potentially see his side through to the World Cup finals in South Africa in 2010.

Essien and company duly delivered, but the former Bastia and Lyon man was perhaps the most impressive influence on the pitch, netting an excellent solo goal in the second half and otherwise leading by example.

The Chelsea man is set to be one of the top stars at next year's tournament, which Ghana can now begin to prepare for".

Each week, Goal.com worldwide team of editors will put forward a selected candidate for achieving something special for that matchday and it fell for Micheal Essien of Ghana this week.
