Reactions to the death of President John Atta-Mills of Ghana

On July 24, 2012

From AFAG, Ghana

PRESIDENT MILLS REST IN PEACE

In this grave period, perhaps the darkest and most challenging in the history of Ghana's democratic governance, the country has been hit hard with the sudden death of our finest statesman, His Excellency John Evans Atta-Mills.

Members of the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) filled with deep pain, shares with the people of Ghana, home and abroad, the depth of pain crossing our hearts in this difficult time. AFAG, sharing in this time of grief, have responded accordingly to the one week call by President John Mahama for national mourning.

AFAG over and over again, have refrained from commenting on issues that pertained to the health of our late president. However, in this painful situation that we all find ourselves, AFAG has a voice and if God wills, we will make it known after the national week of mourning.

May the God Lord hold and keep our former first lady, and family. “Madam, Ghanaians both home and abroad are united behind you and it’s our prayer that you remain calm and firm for the good Lord is in control.”

May our Lord hold and keep us all both home and abroad.

President Mills we salute you! May your soul rest in perfect peace

OO Ghana, ye dunseni abu. odupon atutu. Ghana damire fa due

From Rev. Dr. Casely B. Assamuah

I was just informed that the President of Ghana, John Atta-Mills died today. He has been unwell for some time. Even though I didn’t know him personally, I have family and friends who were very close to him so this feels like a family bereavement. The country is so deeply divided along political lines that his demise will be a source of great concern. As a man, he had had a distinguished career as a law professor before entering politics, and even those who oppose him politically will concede that he was personally a man of integrity and incorruptible – not a bad epitaph in a continent sorely lacking in such leadership qualities. He will be missed especially as Ghanaians go to the polls this November.

As you think of us, pray for his wife Ernestina, and for the people of Ghana. Death always gives a different perspective on life and so pray that the people of Ghana will be even more closer to God and embrace the One who is known as the Ancient of Days.

May he rest in peace and may God continue to watch over His precious children in Ghana and elsewhere.

Blessings,
