A note from Dr. Kwaku Osafo (Ph.D.), that
came to our attention at Ghanadot.com, read "You have made
Ghana and Africa proud…"
And indeed, she has (Mrs. Mary
Chinery-Hesse).
According to Dr. Safo,
"the colleges which make up the University of London"
have honored Mrs. Chinery-Hesse with an Honorary Doctor of
Science (Economics) degree.
He continued to state that Mrs.
Chinery-Hesse "is the first Ghanaian recipient (among) a
handful of Africans, including the late President Nelson
Mandela" to receive such an honor."
And that "Mrs. Chinery-Hesse has a
distinguished national and global public service; from being a
Permanent Secretary (now Chief Director) at Ghana's Ministry
of Finance and Economic Planning to UNDP's Resident
Representative in Africa and the Caribbean”.
She has also served “on several top
Advisory Boards to UN Secretary Generals… served as the Deputy
Director-General of the International Labour Organization in
Geneva, Senior Adviser to former President J.A. Kufuor and was
Board Chair for Zenith Bank in Ghana.”
“She is now the first woman Chancellor of
the University of Ghana and still consults for several
agencies of the United Nations."
Dr.
Osafo said, "My research reveals that the Foundation
Day of this ceremony is the annual celebration of the
University of London's first Chapter granted on 28 November
1836 by William IV.
The first honorary degrees were presented in June 1903,
and have been bestowed on a wide range of distinguished
individuals from both the academic and non-academic worlds.”
And since 1903, past recipients have
included “the Prince of Wales, King George V and Queen Mary,
Winston Churchill, Judi Dench, TS Elliot, Margo Fonteyn, Henry
Moore, and Nelson Mandela."
Mrs. (Lady) Chinery Hesse, now Dr.
Chinery Hesse," has confirmed all the above on contact.
We at Ghanadot.com join Dr. Kwaku Osafo
(Ph.D. Stanford) in wishing Dr. Mary Chinery-Hesse all the
best wishes for the future.
