Authorities of KNUST to streamline course on Geo-Information Science

Kumasi, March 31, Ghanadot/GNA — Authorities of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, (KNUST) in Kumasi are liaising with authorities of International Institute of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation to streamline its course on Geo-Information in Natural Resource Management.

Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST who announced this said the collaboration was necessary since information techniques had become important tools for supporting decision making, especially in natural resource management.

He was speaking at the graduation of the third batch of students of Geo-Information in Natural Resource Management (GISNATUREM) Programme in Kumasi on Tuesday.

The five students, who graduated after 18 months of studies, received Masters Degree Certificates.
Professor Adarkwa pointed out that Ghana like many other African countries was faced with natural resource and environmental management problems due to the recklessness of the citizenry in sustaining the biodiversity.

He urged the graduates to put into practice the knowledge acquired and work closely with city planners, environmentalists and other stakeholders in the formulation of policies that would promote sustainable use of the country’s natural resources.

Professor Robert Abaidoo, Provost of College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said the success of any Geo-Information mission depended on other disciplines of Geomatic Engineering, availability of Hardware and Software.

He said KNUST was committed to training students in those aspects and more importantly produce the needed man-power for effective management of the nation’s natural resources.
