Director
of Ghana Health Service call on Obama to continue Bush's
malaria programme
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot
Accra, July 7, Ghanadot - On February 19 2008, President
Kuffour hosted US President Goerge Bush and his wife
Laura Bush in Accra. During the historic visit,
President Bush announced a $17 million package for Ghana
to fight malaria. The money was to be released within
five year's duration.
There has however been a change in the American
presidency, from George Bush to Barack Obama, and the
Ghana Health Service is calling on the latter's
administration to make available the $17 million package
to fight malaria within the stipulated time.
In an interview with the section of the Ghanaian media
yesterday, the Director of Ghana Health Service, Mr
Elias Sory said, malaria is having a devastating effects
on majority of Ghanaians and it is important President
Obama continue from where Bush left.
He noted that, though America had been hard hit by the
global economic crunch, President Obama must ensure that
the money is released to the Ghana's health sector to
fight malaria to the barest minimum.
"We are therefore expecting nothing from him than to
re-assure us that he will continue to fund Ghana's quest
to fight malaria with the $17 million package announced
by George Bush a year ago", Dr Elias Sory revealeed.
