Accra, Aug 13,
Ghanadot - After much pressure from Ghana Federation of Labor,
the government has decided that free uniform for schools be
locally produced.
The idea of local
production will be further strengthened when all uniform
services, including the military, police and para-military
institutions are bought under the same scheme.
The above was made
known by Vice President Mr. John Dramani when he met with
members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the
Textile, Garment and Leather Employees Union at the Castle
yesterday.
It should be recalled
that when the news about the uniform award being given to the
Chinese was broken by the media, government first vehemently
denied the possibility of any contractual agreement between it
and the Chinese.
The president of the
Ghana Federation of Labor, Mr. Abraham Koomsoon, who had
vehemently opposed the Chinese contract idea said finally upon
hearing the news from VP Dramani, "this is all we want from
government."
The president of the
Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi, on
behalf of his union, also pledged to work with government on the
issue.
V.P Dramani promised
that the government would apply for a 15% waver on taxes to
enable the local textile industry to produce the material for
the uniforms on time.
He also added that,
as was stated in the NDC's (the governerning party) manifesto,
promoting "made-in-Ghana goods" would always be on the top shelf
of their policy initiatives.
