Maame Dokono harassed by police
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 6, Ghanadot - The Peace & Love Orphanage belonging to Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono has been closed down after an eight year old boy allegedly sodomised a six month old baby.

The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police explained that the action was meant to protect the inmates of the orphanage.

Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU, Chief Inspector Irene Oppong, told Ghanadot that the orphanage was operating illegally. She disclosed that, the license of the orphanage expired in March 2006 and had since not been renewed.

DOVVSU Officials stormed the orphanage yesterday to invite Grace Omaboe for questioning, but a fracas resulted in what Inspector Oppong said was generated by insults from Maame Dokono.

Maame Dokono claimed attempts were made by the officials to forcibly arrest her even though she had informed them of her willingness to come to the office with her lawyer.

To her, because she was with the NDC and decided to defect to NPP which lost the last year election, the current government wants to use the power to unlawfully mistreat her. She believes the closure of the orphanage is an attempt to teach her a lesson.

Inspector Irene Oppong said her outfit has preferred charges of exposing child to harm against Maame Dokono as stipulated by the Children's Act.

This is because under the Act, a person under 12 years cannot be charged with a criminal offence but rather the parent or guardian of the child.

She denied claims by Ms Omaboe that her ordeal was politically motivated, adding that they are just doing their job to protect the children in the country.

Thinking Chinese food for dinner?

Feature, Feb 5, Ghanadot - I am not sure about the real origin of operators of Chinese restaurants in Ghana. But I would assume that they are not real Chinese because of the cost for this culinary service in Ghana. Real Chinese are thrifty and economically sensitive people. They will not allow this outrageous pricing of Chinese food, such as happens in Ghana, to occur on main land China........ ..More
