Water supply restored to some parts of Accra-Minister
Audrey Agyiri-Inkoom

The Deputy Minister of Water Resources Works and Housing, Dr Hannah Bissiw, says the Ghana Water Company Limited has restored water supply to parts of Accra including Kaneshie, Mataheko, Dansoman and other areas within the low pressure zones.

Various communities within Accra have been without water for the past four days following an electrical fault on one of the control panels at the pump station at the Weija head works.

The shortage has caused severe inconvenience among many people across various parts of the capital.

There were reports on Tuesday, February 9, that experts from Ballest-Nedam, the Dutch company that installed the control panel at the intake pump station at the Weija Head works were expected in Ghana on Thursday February 11, from South Africa to help repair the machine.

In an interview on Citi FM, Dr Hannah Bissiw said one of the damaged machines was repaired by local engineers on Monday night.

According to her, local engineers have since been working hard to fix the damaged equipment and to restore regular water supply.

“The machine started working at exactly 8:25 pm then thirty five minutes after the machine had been under operation, the water started coming through the gasket…during the night we had a production of 5.5 million gallons until early this morning... the forecast is that by the close of today we should be producing around 40 million gallons”.

She added that her office is awaiting a detailed report on the performance of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL) to enable the Ministry decide on the future of the company.

The Deputy Works and Housing Minister admitted that there have been constant calls on the government to abrogate its contract with Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), the company acting for the Ghana Water Company Limited but her outfit would rely on the report to prevent them from taking any hasty decision.

“We have a committee in place and we have asked the guarantor, (that’s Ghana Water Company) to give us a report on the performance of Aqua Vitens Rand and based on that report government would take an informed decision” she said.

The change in our pocket is too much

Commentary, Feb 6, Ghanadot - There were many promises that the NDC made during their campaign in the 2008 general elections but there was one that was very prominent and that was the NDC’s promise of “a change that we could feel in our pockets”.
