No workers sacked, according to GT
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 11, Ghanadot - The Head of Communications and Customer Care of Ghana Telecom (GT), Major Albert Don-Chebi (rtd) this morning refuted on Peacefm's Kokrokoo show, the allegations by some newspapers that Ghana Telecom was going to sack some of its workers.

He said, the organisation is asking its old workers who have worked for long and wish to leave service to set up their own businesses voluntarily to submit their names to the company. They will enjoy three months salary per year, times the number of years of service.

Major Don-Chebi said some of the workers started working with Ghana Telecom at the age of 18. They are now old and may wish to leave the organisation to do their own things.

"It is not that we are sacking them, rather we said employees who wish to leave voluntarily can submit their names so that. The company too will give them their fair disengagement package and a transition support programme to assit such employees to be able to set themselves.

"The company have 4,088 staff, and think we are many, I challenge any organisation in Ghana who have more workers than us, and you know work is more of a technology driven one and everyday, new developments and innovations are introduced".

According to him, some of the old workers themselves consulted the management and said they wish to leave but were afraid that the end of service benefit might be too small. That is why GT is giving them this voluntary retirement opportunity with such an attractive end of service benefit.

"Long ago we did a survey and we saw that some of our worker would be happy to leave if better packages are given to them, but we were not having the funds to that was why we could not go ahead with it.

"But now, the company is doing very well and we have now got the fund to give those who would like to leave the company voluntarily".

According to Mr Chebe, GT have no target figure about the number of people who would take advantage of the opportunity thus they do not have a fixed amount of money set aside to be given to those who would like to leave, but any one who wish to leave the company voluntarily will be adequately packaged.
