Civil Servants Associations in Ghana threaten strike action
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, March 23, Ghanadot - Apprehension has been growing among some Civil Servants Associations in the country following government’s directive that they be paid their six months outstanding allowances.

Some members of the associations have been threatening to lay down their tools indefinitely over their June to December 2008 unpaid allowances.

The arrangement was reached between the civil servants and government last year during salary negotiations after which the Controller and Accountant General’s Department was to pay fifteen percent salary increase across the board to members of the association early this January.

The Controller and Accountant General failed to pay the accumulated arrears to the workers as agreed on until last week’s directive from the Finance Ministry.

Information gathered by Ghanadot indicated that the announcement is being received with mixed feelings and suspicion by some of the civil servants.

Secretary of the Central Region Civil Servants, Association Kwame Dadzie Dennis revealed that “some of them have doubts because these monies we were expecting in January 2009 didn’t come and in February too we were promised, it didn’t come.”

The Ashanti Region branch of the association has already made it clear they will not hesitate to lay down their tools if government fails to honor its promise.

Asked whether the Central Regional branch will consider a similar action if such a situation arises, Mr. Dennis noted that “we have not taken that decision… we expect that it will be something nationwide and when its nationwide, then we expect the decision to be coming from National Executive Council”.
