Commercial drivers given 6 weeks ultimatum to register vehicles
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, March 25, Ghanadot - The Ministry of Transport in its attempt to curb the increasing spate of road accidents and consequent loss of lives have issued a 6 week ultimatum to all commercial drivers in the country within which to register their vehicles with a union.

According to the Ministry, failure to adhere with this directive will be punished with sanctions of inability to ‘load’ at the various transport stations in the country.

The meeting comes days after President John Mills directed Roads and Highways Minister, Joe Gidisu, to meet with stakeholders of the transport sector in Ghana to put together strategies to curb the rate of deadly road accidents.

Some 100 people have died in the past one month alone. The accidents occurred mainly on the Accra - Kumasi Highway and the Accra-Cape Coast Highway.

Roads and Highways Minister, Hon Joe Gidisu noted that in order for the proposed scheme to work, the heads of the various transport unions will be tasked to ensure that unsubscribed drivers will be prevented from “loading” passengers at their stations.

He added that the directive was also aimed at ensuring that a database of all commercial drivers in the country was acquired with the long term aim of reducing the spate of road accidents in the country.

The Minister stated that new models of street lights were to be introduced in the Accra metropolis by next week on pilot basis.

He noted however due to the capital intensive nature of the initiative, it will take some time for it to be replicated across the country.

Mr. Gidisu also made mention of the new calming measures to control traffic on the nation’s roads in the short term, such as the introduction of log books for commercial drivers.
