Menhyia official shot dead, police believed assassination
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Kumasi, March 26, Ghanadot - Opanyin Kwabena Akosa, one of the official bearers of concoctions at the Manhyia palace has been shot dead on his way to his home. The incident occurred ahead of an official programme of the Manhyia palace scheduled to take place on Monday, March 26 2009.

The Police said, the Otumfuo had sent him to go for some items for the 10th Anniversary celebration.

Superintendent Kwabena Antwi Bosiako who is the Suame district police commander noted that the kinsman was shot in the neck. It is alleged that the man, on his way back from collecting the items, alighted from a car at an area close to his house.

Opanyin Akosa used a little bush path close by to get to his house.  It was on this path that he was shot in the neck by unknown assassins.

According to the Police there were no eyewitnesses at the scene though it is alleged that members of a church close by said they heard a gunshot at around the said time.

Superintendent Kwabena Antwi-Buasiako noted that it could not be said exactly what gun was used in the shooting.

To him, it is highly unlikely that the incident was a case of armed robbery since at the time the police got to the scene, the deceased still had on him his mobile phone, money and even the things he went to purchase.

“Right now I will not say it was the work of some armed robbers because in fact I mean his mobile phone was still on him and you know these armed robbers these are some of the items they normally look for but his mobile phone was still on him. Everything, the items he went to collect everything was on him so I will not go straight away to say it was the work of armed robbers.”

He however, stated that it was too soon to tell exactly what happened since the Police have just begun with their investigations to the incident and promised to make all findings available to the public.

The Police said that the area where the man was shot has been an area under heavy security surveillance since several armed robbery incidents had been recorded there.

The Police have assured residents in the area that there was no need for panic saying security in the area and during the 10th celebrations was going to be very tight.
