Accra, May 19, Ghanadot - The
immediate past Inspector -General of Police (IGP) in the
former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Mr. Patrick
Acheampong has commended President John E. A. Mills for
appointing Mr. Paul Tawiah as the current IGP in the
country.
According to him, the president could not have made any
better choice in the police service than choosing Mr. Tawiah,
adding that “I have worked with Mr. Tawiah for several years
and I can confidently say he is competent, hardworking and a
team player with all the qualities to serve as IGP”.
It would be recalled that, President John Evans Atta Mills
on Friday 15, 2009 in consultation with the Council of
State, appointed Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye as the substantive
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of the Republic of Ghana,
with immediate effect.
Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye replaces Mrs. Elizabeth
Mills-Robertson, the Acting Inspector – General of Police
after the Ex- IGP, Mr. Patrick Acheampong who
served under the NPP
administration.
The new IGP was born on 6th May, 1953. He has a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Computer Science and an Executive MBA in
Human Resource Management.
He was commissioned as Assistant Superintendent of Police
into the Ghana Police Service in 1980 and rose to the rank
of Commissioner of Police in 2002. He was, until his
appointment, the Commissioner-in Charge of Strategic
Direction and Monitoring of the Ghana Police Service.
Meanwhile, women groups in Ghana have expressed
discontentment of the president choice saying President
Mills have disappointed them. According to them the promise
made by the president to women during his campaign has not
yet be realised.
To them, for Mrs. Mills-Robertson to be removed and replaced
with another male is a sign that still people believe women
cannot handle challenging roles and that for President Mills
to promise 40 percent women in his administration was a
political gimmick which women should not have taken
seriously.
