Anglogold Ashanti workers on strike
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot
Accra, August 5, Ghanadot -
Information reaching Ghanadot indicated that over 5000
workers of the Anglogold Ashanti Limited have just this
morning embarked on an indefinite strike over what they
described as unfair wage scheme by management.
Mr. Prince William Ankrah, the General Secretary of Mine
Workers Union, has accused management of being less
sensitive to the plight of the local workers of the company.
In an interview on Joy FM, he maintained that the striking
workers would only go back to work if management resolved to
rectify the inconsistency in wage rate between local workers
and expatriates.
To him, the time has come for the local workers of the
company to be given decent and highly motivated pay for
their work, adding that the local workers do more work than
their expatriate colleagues.
“We believe as a business they should have a social, equity
conscience… We are just watching the triggers.
Iif they come
to us today we talk today.
“We will make sure that we curtail the action; otherwise the
action will continue. Most of the expatriates have virtually
nothing to offer.”
The General Secretary maintained that mine workers have over
the years proven their reluctance to use strike but added
the latest action is to “send signal that we can create the
enablers but we can be tough as well; so management cannot
take us for granted”.
He said the union is in talks with the National Mine Workers
Association to escalate the strike action into a national
one, hoping this and other demands could be met.

educational system
Commentary, Aug 5, Ghanadot
-
It has just been revealed that the
government will lower Senior High School (SHS) duration to

enquiry on the merit, but in reality on a wish to fulfill a
political promise that needed to be kept..
