Kwesi Pratt descends on Prez Mills' Gov’t
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot
Accra, Aug 11, Ghanadot - The
Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt
Jnr. has expressed his disappointment
with the Mills-led administration for
awarding a school uniform contract
to a Chinese firm.
Speaking on Peace FM, Mr. Pratt stated “what
worries me the more is the
explanation, the Minister of Education, and also Tony Aidoo
gave on air.”
To him, Tony Aidoo, who is
in-charge of government evaluation, and the educational
Minister, Tettey Enyo explained that products of the
Ghanaian Textile Companies were
not competitive enough, and that the
Ghana producers would not deliver on
schedule. And that the Ghana
government needed companies that could
pre-finance the project.
According to Pratt, the main aim
of any government would be to
develop the country through local institutions and
organisations available, but that was not
the case with the Chinese school uniform importation.
Also, Prattt said, such decisions
by the government wwould likely
kill our infant industries, adding
that “if you don’t have confidence in your own
professionals who will?"
Mr. Pratt explained that, the government’s action
was a direct negation of the trade
ministry’s efforts over the years to develop the nation’s
human and natural resources and infant industries.
The Editor was speaking in reaction to Monday’s edition of
the ‘Public Agenda Newspaper’ Publication, titled “Chinese
firms Get School Uniform Contract.”
According to the paper, the government awarded the contract
to the firm, because it wanted organisations that could
pre-finance the printing, to meet the September deadline.
