We are ready for Akwatia elections tomorrow-EC
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot
Accra, Aug 17, Ghanadot - The Electoral Commission (EC) has
disclosed that all is set for the Akwatia election re-run slated
for Tuesday, August 18.
In spite of concerns over security in the area following violent
clashes between supporters of the NPP and NDC, the EC says
ballot papers have been dispatched to the constituency and that
the poll scheduled to take place at six polling stations will
come off.
Mr. Christian Owusu Parry, Public Relations Officer of the EC in
an interview on Joy FM maintained that EC's staffs to manage the
process have adequately been trained.
According to him, the EC had not received any correspondence
from national security, thus plans to conduct the elections
therefore remain intact.
The Public Relations Officer hinted that it could be too ate to
postpone the elections. “Let us remember the election is only
tomorrow and the people need to be well informed ahead of time
whether it is coming off or not; as we speak now we haven’t had
any correspondence from the national security dealing with the
situation on the ground. “We think that running elections in six
polling stations is something that the security agencies can
provide adequate security for,” he explained.
Violence over the weekend at Akwatia has led to calls for a
postponement of the polls, but the two major political parties,
NDC and NPP think otherwise, to them to election should go on.
