The 24 persons
who are leaders of a coalition known as “Hands off Libya, Hands
off Africa “ have been arrested by the police for defying a
court injunction on a planned demonstration despite earlier
announcement that they have been released on bail.
They were rounded up by the Police after they embarked on a
pro-Gadaffi demonstration to the United States Embassy in Accra.
In an interview on Citi Fm, Grandfather Ayitomeka, a member of
the coalition said the action by police is rather unfortunate,
adding that the police is uncoordinated to them.
“They are still in BNI custody, we are
now negotiation their release “.
“It is not true, I have a copy of
the injunction, they got the injunction on the 15th, they never
served anybody with the injunction so we are not aware that they
even went to court.
He said,
"It is so disgraceful but we are not surprised because the
commander Rose Atinga Bio said that the American Ambassador is
not happy about it so it is obvious that this is an
orchestration by the American Embassy”.
Meanwhile, DSP Cephas Arthur, Acting
Director of Public Relations at the Police Headquarters revealed
that the police is still investigating the incident and will
release the arrested persons when necessary.
“What I can confirm is that they are
still in the hands of the police and investigations are
continuing”.
He said that “They were served
long enough to enable them take a decision to obey the court
orders”.
DSP Cephas Arthur denied the
allegation that the police service acted the way it did because
the American Ambassador expressed discontent about the matter.
To him, the Police will never act or take
action because another country is forcing them to do so, adding
that this is not the first time the Police has moved in to stop
an illegal demonstration in Ghana.
