NPP Transition Team to Back off if...

Accra, February 18, Ghanadot - Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Transition Team are planning to back off from the Joint Transition Team if the current harassment, intimidations and other irregularities continue.

They added that “some of the egregious acts that ensued were inviting the Auditor-General to present a draft audit report on the Ghana @ 50 celebrations in the full glare of both the electronic and print media which is contrary to the practice and ethics of the accounting profession”.

Other such actions were the summoning and interrogation of vehicle suppliers for the Ghana@50 celebrations, and the leaking of half-truths on transition issues to the media.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra yesterday, the Former Chief of Staff, Mr. Kwadwo Mpiani, flanked by the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, cited the news publication alleging that 39 vehicles had been retrieved from members of the past administration.

He stressed that the clear impression created was that these vehicles had been taken from the officials who had tried to surreptitiously keep state property for their personal use.

“I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that all those vehicles had been returned to the custody of the presidency without any prompting”, Mr. Mpiani added.

Also, teams of the National Bureau of Investigations (BNI) officials have been going to the homes of some former ministers and other key people in the previous government, claiming to be looking for government vehicles.

He indicated that they see these actions to be in bad faith since the two sides were supposed to be having “joint” sessions for the benefit of the national.  Rather, the process so far has added an inquisitorial dimension to these one-sided sessions; contrary to the best practices of transition teams.

The Former Chief of Staff, noted one instance of such malpractices.  He said after the government transition team had finished with the one-sided compilation of reports, which did not include views or representations from members of the former government, the co-chairman of the team from the current administration wrote to invite the NPP side to a meeting “to agree on some loose ends taking into cognizance the principles of fair play”.

Mr .Mpiani's view was that the gesture came too late in the day.  And that by their own admission, "our colleagues have written their reports based on meetings they have held with bureaucrats and officials" without the participation of the NPP side whatsoever.

He said there was a clear attempt being made to paint the past government in in a bad a light as possible and any report that emanated from such enterprise and intention cannot and should not be presented as a joint report.
