Government
Transition Team spends over GH¢30m on sitting allowances
Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot
Accra, March 11, Ghanadot - The government Transition Team,
comprising 92 members over the course of six weeks have
spent a total of about GH¢30million on sitting allowances
and per diems.
A
pressure group known as Democratic Movement for Ghana,
disclosed this to Ghanadot in Accra.
The amount which was wasted in the first month of the new
administration, the group said, could have built a 150Km
stretch of motor road, or built a 136 unit classroom blocks
and even three clinics for people in the rural areas who
suffer from the lack of these social amenities.
The group the current transitional team's expenses to the
that of the previous government that served snacks and no
sitting allowances for the 16-member of its transition team.
The group therefore asked the government to make accounts of
the government transition team public for scrutiny so as to
bring wrong doers to book.
The Spokesperson of the Democratic Movement for Ghana, Mr.
Manaf Ibrahim who read a statement on the state of the
nation under the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)
government decried the government over the recent reduction
of fuel prices.
According to him, it was improper on the part of government
to have delayed the reduction of fuel prices in the country,
because the government promised Ghanaians to reduce
petroleum prices as soon as they are reduced on the
international market.
However, fuel prices were reduced for about one and half
weeks but there was no respective reduction in the country.
Mr. Ibrahim stressed that it was highly inadequate for
government to have reduced five pesewase on every litre of
petrol, adding that there in effect the exercise reduced the
tax portion only and not the actual cost.
He therefore called on the government to reduce the fuel
prices to the drastic stage that President John Evans Atta
Mills promised Ghanaians during the 2008 general elections.
Touching on harassment of private individuals and political
opponents, the group noted that it was an open secret that
both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Akufo-
Addo Danquah and his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had
been harassed and humiliated, along with individuals
like the Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana Limited
and others by the NDC thugs; all in the name of recovery of
assets.
The group pointed out that the approach was wrong in the
sense that it caused embarrassment for all Ghanaians and
would erode the international goodwill built over the years.
Furthermore, it said, the whole exercise of harassment had
contributed to to the killing of investor confidence in the
country because the right to own property without fear and
intimidation was and should be paramount pre-requisite for
international and domestic investors.
"It is sad that the leadership of the party has not openly
condemned these over exuberant party members," the group
said.
"We as a group therefore called on the NDC leadership
especially the President, to openly come out and condemn
these acts and not just issue statements of apologies which
have woefully failed to curtail these embarrassing
incidents," said Alhaji Ramadan Abu, a member of the
movement.
