Accra, May 4, Ghanadot - The
increasing spate of gross indiscipline in the Ghanaian society,
especially on our roads, annual floods, poor state of health
facilities, poor sanitation, corrupt legislatures and
judiciaries, poor policing and dysfunctional institutions give a
gloomy picture that Ghana has a serious leadership crises.
To this end, majority of Ghanaians are calling for the grooming
of politicians and other leaders in all spheres of human
endeavour in order to salvage the first African country to throw
off the yolk of imperialism and to stand
against the Whiteman’s aggressions.
The latest to add his voice to this chorus is the President of
the Full Gospel Church International, Rt. Reverend Samuel Mensah.
According to him, politicians who are put in leadership
positions to enforce 'law and order'
must be groomed to enable them to perform to meet the hopes and
aspirations of the people.
He called on political office holders to stop the blame game
because leaders should not pass the
buck.
In Ghana, most politicians, including majority of those who are
in managerial positions in organizations, have become “fire
fighters rather than fire preventers”.
To Rev. Mensah, it appeared Ghanaians
did not know where the nation was moving and questioned how and
why politicians should manage the affairs of the nation with a
“fire fighting mentality”.
The reverend said sector ministers
should have goals, and well-defined vision and be given targets
to meet.
He cited road and transport, education, town and country
planning and health sectors as areas whose administrators should
be swift.
For instance in the road and transport sector, hawking on
streets has become the order of the day, as traffic lights
frequently break down, coupled with indiscipline on the roads.
At times, street and traffics lights can go off for many days
without the appropriate authorities putting efforts to repair
them.
In the education sector, the constant
change of curricula and policies of education have adversely
affected the country’s education. As any government can come to
power and either add or subtract the number of years of the
basic education as well as the senior level.
The reverend alleged that some lapses
in the Ministry of Education had led to 106 students missing the
just ended Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE).
To add up, flooding has become an annual affair to talk about,
but nothing practical is being done about it apart from just
visits to flood-prone areas by the country’s National Disaster
Management Organisation (NADMO), an anti disaster agency with
selected media personnel.
It was pathetic to see Ministers of State wasting tax-payers
money to purchase fuel and fly helicopters, taking aerial view
of floods, and yet nothing came out of it. This is the wasting
of tax-payers money to the highest degree.
All these go to affirm that indeed Ghana is in serious
leadership crises but what would the President Mills led
administration do.
A cross section of Ghanaians is calling on the new government to
do something about the looming global economic crisis which is
staring the country at its face.
Mr. Frank Asiedu, a consultant, called on the government to
engage the services of leadership consultants to take political
leaders through courses to upgrade their skills.
He however, called on Ghanaians to demand good governance and
accountability from their leaders.
