Volunteerism is cardinal to the Development of Africa-participants

Accra, Aug 10, Ghanadot - Participants at this year’s closing ceremony of IMANI residential seminar held at Ashesi University, in Accra have stressed that for Africa to come out of the shackles of poverty, marginalization, disease and leadership crises, the youth must exhibit the spirit of volunteerism to serve in their various communities.

According to the participants “volunteerism is cardinal to the development of Africa” because it enables the youth to develop their talents and equip with some experiences in the global marketplace.

The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. William Williams observed that volunteerism was essential part of leadership and urged youth in Africa to see working their local communities as way of paying back to the communities.

The ceremony was also used to mark presentation of the inaugural “Sohne Prize for African Excellence” awards.

The prize aims at celebrating “Excellence” is being dedicated to the memory of the late Guido Sohne.

The late Sohne was Ghana’s and Africa’s most passionate and visionary enthusiast of the use of technology innovation to redeem Africa from marginalization caused by poverty, especially technical poverty.

Mr. Eric Osiakwan, who read a short biography of the late Sohne, described him as an ICT icon in Africa and urged the youth to emulate his shinning examples.

He used the occasion to appeal to the youth to take the study of ICT seriously, stressing that there are of opportunities in the ICT sector.

He urged youth that they could use technology to make them more productive, effective and efficient.

Mr. Kobina Jackson, an ICT expert indicated that the late Sohne was a talented and skilful person and past away at time technology was more needed in Africa.

Meanwhile, the Sohne prize for African Excellence was received by Mr. Theophilus Acheampong, while the Grand prize went to Mr. Martins Obuno and the Gold prize was taken by Ms. Afi Agbeno.

On other hand, the merit awards went to Omoniyie Tuoson, Benjamin Bentuah and Samuel Yelade.


In all, this year’s participants of the residential seminar were presented with a certificate each and some reading books.
