Edward Mahama bids farewell to PNC
By Awudu Salami Sule

Accra, July 2, Ghanadot - The 2008 Presidential candidate for the Convention People's Party (PNC), Dr Edward Mahama has finally step down as the leader of the party.

Per the constitution of the PNC, the Presidential candidate is the leader of the party and his exit means the party has to convey an emergency delegate conference to elect a new candidate. In the interim, the National Chairman of the party is acting.

Information gathered by Ghanadot has it that, Dr Edward Mahama at a National Executive Meeting held yesterday at the party's headquarters in Accra tendered in his resignation letter.

He however promised to work actively to support any candidate that the party will choose at its emergency congress.

Dr Edward Mahama was the presidential candidate for the PNC in the 2000 general elections but he lost to President Kuffour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In the year 2004,he contested again but to no avail as President Kuffour won for the second time. With his determination to become President of Ghana, Dr Edward Mahama once again contested for the 2008 general elections and he lost to President Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

His penchant to always lead the party undoubtedly caused a problem to the PNC as it created various factions in the party and it was no wonder the party performed poorly in the 2008 general elections.

Meanwhile, Mr Bernard Monah, the General Secretary of the party has revealed in an interview that the party would very soon convey an emergency delegates conference to elect a new Presidential candidate though he failed to give the exact date for the conference.
