University Students To Undertake Compulsory Programme On Pedagogy --Says Mahama Ayariga
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

July 30, 2011

The deputy Minister of Education, Mr Mahama Ayariga has indicated that, the Ministry of Education is in discussions with the Universities to introduce a compulsory module on pedagogy in all tertiary institutions.

According to the deputy Minister, the greatest harm that is being caused to the children’s future is the unleashing of thousands of graduates of tertiary institutions who know nothing about how to teach but serve as teachers in the basic schools when they engage in national service.

“Since most of the graduates get posted to teach in our schools but lack basic teaching skills, the Ministry of Education is in discussions with the Universities to introduce a compulsory module on pedagogy in all tertiary institutions and we have been talking to NSS too about this and we hope that the stakeholders will accept this imperative and we will move expeditiously to implement the programme”, he said.

Mr Mahama Ayariga said this at the National Service Scheme (NSS) stakeholders’ conference held at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra.

He said the National Service Scheme is an effort to create a compulsive legal regime for the strategic deployment of the energies of the youth of the country for the attainment of a set national vision and this include both the educated and uneducated youth.

“Unfortunately, our national service scheme has over the years restricted itself to only school graduates and the deployment of its personnel has not been particularly aimed at implementing particular development visions”, he stated.

He therefore urged the officers of the scheme to take a second look at the set vision of the NSS as they review the entire scheme after several decades of its implementation.
