Accra Mayor vows to end school shift
system
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot
Accra, Dec 11, Ghanadot - In Accra, the
nation's capital of Ghana, some public
schools at the basic level still run the
shift system which is a result of lack of
classroom blocks to accommodate students.
Instead of spending at least
six hours in school, the affected schools
spend a little over three hours and this has
negatively affected the academic performance
of these schools.
The mayor of Accra, Mr Alfred Vandapuye has
however vowed to end this unwholesome
situation in the Accra metropolis.
In an interview with some reporters in
Accra, Mr Vandapuye has revealed that, his
outfit would from next year come out with a
programme which would be aimed at ending the
school shift system. The programme he said
was to take inventory of all abandoned
buildings in the metropolis and renovate
them to be used as a classrooms.
"We have abandon buildings like the Accra
Community Centre, the Usher Fort and host of
other buildings which can be renovated to
support these schools which runs the shift
system", he said.
According to Mr Vandapuye, the programme is
achievable even though he conceded that, it
would cost the Accra Metropolitan Assembly
some money in terms of renovating the
buildings and furnishing them to suit a
classroom.
"The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is aware of
the cost involved in undertaking this
project but with determination we can help
these schools to end the shift system and
therefore allow their students to enjoy
learning to the fullest", he assured.
Mr Vandapuye said, one of his major
priorities as the mayor of Accra is to
promote education and he would leave no
stone unturned to achieve that aim.
