VP’S OFFICE BUGGED?

January 18, 2007, Ghanadot - Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama’s bid to enter the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential race might have hit a snag with reports that his office at the Osu Castle has been bugged.

Even though Mr Yaw Boabeng Asamoah, Alhaji Aliu’s special aide denied knowledge of the bugging, he admits the Vice-President’s office is instituting investigations into the report published by The Independent newspaper.

The newspaper reported on Thursday morning that some unscrupulous persons had bugged the Vice President’s Office ostensibly to hear discussions, deliberations and the strategies been mapped out.

No organization or institution has claimed responsibility.

Mr Asamoah also denied that the VP has changed his meeting places and schedules due to the bugging. He explained that it was virtually impossible to change his schedule. It is however, not known what could be coming out of the initial investigations.

He said he was preparing a memo to the Head of National Security for immediate action on the information.

Vice President Mahama, labelled an “outsider”, has been keyed to contest the NPP Presidential slot this November with more known and long serving NPPists of which the number is close to 20 personalities.

The NPP Presidential race is getting fierce with time as the number of candidates keeps rising every week. Political analysts are often at a loss how the list could be looking like finally.

When contacted, Edwin Arthur, Executive Editor of The Independent said the newspaper sources are credible and would soon be coming out with extra information on the matter.

“May be Mr Asamoah is been economical with the truth or it could also be that he does not know anything about it at all and is yet to know,” he added.

Mr Arthur said the newspapers information is that the bugging might have been done over the last two weeks.

The Vice-President has over the last three days been out of the capital in Kumasi and Sunyani where together with President John Agyekum Kufuor they held the sixth People’s Assembly, usually an occasion where the public is given the opportunity interact with the President with his Ministers about their stewardship.
