“HOTEL KUFUOR” OPENS NEXT MONTH?
Accra, January 21 - After months of controversy concerning
sources of funding and alleged misuse of state funds,
information filtering into Ghanadot.com offices in Accra
indicates that the so-called “Kufuor Hotel” is set to open
in February 2007.
The hotel is reported to be opening in time to be ready to
host special invited guests to the forthcoming Jubilee
Celebrations heralding Ghana’s 50th Independence Anniversary
which falls on March 6th, 2007.
Confirming the speculations, Chief Kufuor, the eldest son of
President John Agyekum Kufuor said the multimillion dollar
edifice situated in the Airport Residential Area, one of
Accra’s plush neighbourhoods, would definitely be ready in
time to host some of the anniversary guests.”
Chief Kufuor is known to have
raised over 8 million dollars to purchase the hotel with the
Prudential Bank and National Investment Bank featuring
prominently in the financial arrangement.
Speaking in a separate interview, Chief Kufuor was
tight-lipped over the hotels’ name saying it would be
significant going close to “African Regent Hotel” .
Chief Kufuor is the owner of Airport West Hospitality Ltd,
the Holding Company which owns “Hotel Kufuor.”
Chief has declined numerous requests to journalists to tour
the hotel, but the Editor of the Daily Guide newspaper, Mrs.
Gina Ama Blay, was afforded an opportunity to tour the hotel
once.
Work has been going on feverishly in recent weeks with
activity going on even at weekends, all aimed at shaping the
place up in time for the big bang.
Chief Kufuor’s purchase of the hotel from its original
owner, Anthony Saoud, hit the headlines making news for
months after one-time economic advisor of President Kufuor,
Ms. Giselle Yajtzi, made some yet to be
substantiated assertions on
the matter of the funding for the hotel.
She claimed then that Chief Kufuor was only fronting for his
father and that it was President John Agyekum Kufuor who is
the real owner of the property.
This was before Mr Kwabena Agyepong, the then Spokesperson
for the President, said no one in the Kufuor household owned
the hotel, only for Chief Kufuor himself to issue a
statement days after accepting ownership.
