Two more members of the New Patriotic
Party enter the presidential race
Accra, Feb 13, Ghanadot.com -
Two more members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have
confirmed their desire to run for the presidency of the
Republic on the party’s ticket. They are Prof Mike Oquaye,
Minister of Communications and Member of Parliament (MP) for
Dome-Kwabenya, and Mr Dan Botwe, a former Minister of
Information.
Prof. Oquaye issued a statement in which he said he was
responding to cals from senior members of the party.
He said he therefore felt obliged to heed the clarion call
to serve this nation to the best of his capacity.
Prof Ocquaye however said he will open up only when the time
is right.
Prof Oquaye said given his wealth of experience as a
politician, academic and statesman, he saw himself aptly
qualified to bid for the high office of President in order
to further the cycle of service to God and man which he had
distinctly prosecuted for more than 30 years.
Mr Botwe, however, chose Wa, the Upper West Regional
capital, to make the declaration.
He noted reports in sections of the media which are seeking
to set him against other contestants in the fight for the
NPP leadership into the 2008 General Elections
. He said he was in the process of conferring with members
of the party in all the 230 constituencies to let them know
his intention, after which he would formally announce his
candidature.
He gave the assurance that he would work for the greater
interest of the country and the party and not that of
individuals.
His statement explained that he had in recent times refused
to be dragged into openly campaigning because although he
possessed the requisite pedigree to join in the fray, he
decided to concentrate on his present official duty to
provide leadership support in the communications industry.
It said the time had come for Ghana to champion the
development of agriculture, which would provide the basis
for rapid and sustained industrialisation for socio-economic
transformation, saying that that would be accomplished with
a closer collaboration with countries which had gone through
the experience.
