Accra, February 17, Ghanadot.com - With the count down
towards the celebration of Ghana’s 50th Anniversary
Independence Anniversary drawing nigh, it is clear that
Fathia Nkrumah, widow of the first President and founder of
modern day Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, will not be
able to participate in the Golden Jubilee anniversary
celebration of the country’s independence.

Information gathered from Sekou Nkrumah, one of her sons who
lives in Accra said she is indisposed.
Madam Fathia, the former First Lady, reported to be
suffering from weight problems and has been hospitalised in
Cairo, Egypt where she resides permanently.
“She is confined to a wheel chair," Sekou said.
Madam Fathia will celebrate her 72nd birthday on February
22. |

The former First Lady has been
living in Cairo since 1986. She visited Ghana during the
40th Independence anniversary celebration in 1997 with Gamel,
her elder son.
Government is yet to be informed about Madam Fathia’s
condition which has warranted his elder brother Gamel, an
economist/journalist, and his sister, Samia, a journalist
based in Italy, to be by their
mother’s bedside at an intensive care unit of
a Cairo hospital.
According to the state owned
Ghanaian Times newspaper,
Professor Francis Nkrumah relayed the news of his mothers’
ailment to Sekou on Wednesday night.
He said his brother, Asked whether the government has been
informed of the situation, Sekou said: "I am unaware if the
government is in the picture about my mother’s health
condition and how she could be helped immediately."
He could also not tell if the Ghana Embassy in Cairo, Egypt,
was aware of Madam Fathia’s condition and has informed the
government.
Madam Fathia, reputed to be one of the most beautiful women
of her time would be sorely missed especially by the youth
of this country who only saw her pictures and stories told
about her. Perhaps, we may never get to see her again.
Meanwhile, the Ghana@50 Secretariat has come under fire to
explain what it has done with the 20 million dollars
approved by Parliament for the event.
Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom on the floor of Parliament asked for
explanation on how money was been spent, especially against
the background that jobs done were not been paid promptly.
He urged the Secretariat to ensure that everybody is part of
the event, saying that a forum of all the political parties
could be organised to solicit views from them on the
celebrations.
Newspaper reports of corporate donations point that more
than 10 billion cedis has been generated.
In another development, the Ghana Armed Forces has uncovered
a suspicious deal involving the award of a contract for the
supply of commemorative medallion for the security services
for the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
