Chiefs urged to promote regional
integration
Kumasi, Nov. 10, GNA – Traditional rulers have been urged to
exert their influence and use their cultural and traditional
ties to foster regional integration and cooperation among
peoples on the African continent.
Dr Francis Appiah, Executive Secretary of the National
African Peer Review Mechanism-Governing Council (NAPRM-GC),
who made the call, said politicians had failed in
integrating Africa and chiefs who represented diversity in
unity could play a critical role in achieving socio-economic
and political integration of Africa, especially on the West
Africa sub-region.
Dr Appiah made the call at a workshop on the dissemination
of the country report of the APRM and the programme of
action for implementation for members of the National House
of Chiefs in Kumasi on Friday.
He said chiefs played a crucial role in national development
and there was the need to integrate them to take the centre
stage in the affairs of the nation.
Dr Appiah stressed the need for chiefs to collaborate with
the central government to provide incentives to
professionals to stay and operate in their communities.
Professor S K B Asante, a member of the Governing Council,
said chiefs were the pillars of national development and it
was important for them to have the full appreciation and
understanding of the APRM implementation process.
He said Ghana had received a lot of commendations for the
bold step taken for it to be reviewed.
Professor Asante said the successful peer review would not
only lead to increased aid flows to the country, but also
make it conducive for investment and good governance.
He appealed to chiefs to assist in the implementation of the
country report to ensure its success.
Odeneho Gyapong Ababio, President of the House, said chiefs
played a critical role in national governance and thanked
the NAPRM Governing Council for recognising the important
role played by chiefs.
