Kumasi, Nov. 18, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police has arrested four persons suspected to be among a cable stealing syndicate operating recently in the Kumasi metropolis and believed to have made away with large quantities of copper cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The suspects, who were arrested at various locations in the metropolis are; Awudu Mohammed, 25, John Kundamdam, 23, Osumanu Haruna, 22 and Peter Baba, 20.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Friday, Police Inspector Yussif Tanko of the Regional Police Public Relations Unit said, the culprits were arrested following a surveillance mounted on them by officials of the ECG and the police.
He said Mohammed and Kudamdam were arrested at Ayigya, whiles the other two were also apprehended at Kwadaso and Nhyiaeso, all suburbs in Kumasi.
Inspector Tanko further revealed that Haruna, who lives at Kwadaso was arrested over the previous week-end and was sentenced to three months imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi circuit court on Friday for stealing.
Haruna, who pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea was said to have been arrested at the ECG yard at Kwadaso with a quantity of copper cables and implements for cutting them, found on him.
In the case of Kundamdam and Mohammed they were caught in the act, when they had climbed some electricity poles and had succeeded in cutting some distribution cables with which they were trying to bolt away.
The two culprits together with Baba who was also arrested with a sack full of copper cables would soon be put to before court.
