Regional DVLA boss unhappy about spate of road accidents

Assin Fosu (C/R), Nov. 20, GNA - Mr Thomas Nintori, Central Regional Licensing Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) at the weekend expressed concern that although there are a fewer number of vehicles in the region compared to others, it ranks third in reported road accidents nationwide.

He quoted statistics indicating that the Central Region, ranked third in 2004 and 2005, behind Greater Accra and Ashanti regions, adding that human error accounted for 80 per cent of such accidents, which claim more than 1,500 lives and injure over 10,000 persons annually nationwide.

Mr Nintori was speaking at an ‘outreach programme on road safety measures’ for drivers and other road users to help stem the rate of road accidents, before, during and after Christmas, at Assin Fosu, Nyakumasi-Ahenkro and Abura-Dunkwa.

He mentioned speeding, overloading, wrongful overtaking, fatigue driving, drunk-driving and disregard for road signs, as some of the avoidable errors identified.

Mr Nintori cautioned drivers to exercise restraint on the road and told them that the safe arrival of their passengers at their destinations fully, depended on how they drove their vehicles.

He advised them to thoroughly check tyres, brakes and the engines of their vehicles to ensure that they are in perfect condition, before taking off.

Inspector Felix Frempong of the Assin Foso MTTU, also cautioned the drivers to desist from using mobile-phones whilst driving, because it has the tendency to cause accidents.
