“We must end multiple products
certification” – High Commissioner
Accra, Nov. 21, GNA – Mr George Kumi, Ghana's High
Commissioner to Nigeria, on Tuesday called for
collaboration among regulatory agencies within the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
to boost trade between member countries.
Mr Kumi told the GNA in Accra that certified
products registered in any of the ECOWAS countries
should be allowed to move freely across the markets
in the Sub-Region.
The High Commissioner said the essence of product
certification was to ensure that citizens consumed
safe and wholesome products and called on the
regulatory agencies to embark on trust and
confidence building measures to overcome the
problem.
"Until we are able to remove this trade barrier,
ECOWAS member-countries will continue to deliberate
on the issue without making headway," he said.
Mr Kumi urged Ghana and Nigeria Chambers of Commerce
to ensure that future trade exhibitions in both
countries "do not experience restriction on goods
for exhibition.
"We cannot kill ourselves. Manufacturers should be
sincere to assist governments to facilitate trade
both within the Sub-Region and at the global
market," he explained.
He said one of the best ways to eradicate poverty in
West Africa was for the governments to empower the
small and medium-scale enterprises with knowledge
and information to enhance productivity.
