Accra, Nov. 22, GNA – Dr Kwame Oppong-Anane, a
Former Director of Animal Production, Ministry of
Food and Agriculture, received recognition at the
Agricultural Institute of Canada (AIC) Honours and
Awards Ceremony on November 7, 2006 held at
Winnipeg, Manitoba Province, Canada.
A statement issued in Accra on Wednesday said Dr
Oppong-Anane, Fellow of the Ghana Society of Animal
Production, received the AIC International Partners
Award in recognition of his work in Ghana for
successfully developing and transferring appropriate
technology to improve the welfare of women in rural
communities in Bole and West Mamprusi Districts in
Northern Ghana.
The statement said under his leadership as the
Coordinator of the AIC International Partnership
Project of the Canadian Society of Animal Science
and Ghana Society of Animal Production, the
Project’s approach to agricultural development
resulted in the empowerment of women's groups to
increase their income as well as improve the health
of their households.
The positive environmental approaches of the Project
have resulted in the reduction of bushfires in the
area and an increase in biomass for livestock
grazing.
The statement said Dr Oppong-Anane has provided
valuable services to local universities as a
Lecturer, Supervisor and Examiner of Graduate
Students.
He has given 12 invited lectures in Africa, Europe,
Australia and North America and has authored or
co-authored more than 60 scientific papers and has
been a consultant to a number of institutions
including the Food and Agricultural Organisation of
the United Nations.
Dr Oppong-Anane was also honoured by Basic
Environmental Systems and Technology Incorporation,
a research and organic input development
organization based in Edmonton, Canada.
The AIC Honours and Awards ceremony was attended by
the Ms Rosam Wowchuk, Minister of Agriculture, Food
and Rural Initiatives, Manitoba Province of Canada,
Mr Yaw Odei Osei, Deputy Ghana High Commissioner to
Canada, a delegation of the Ghana Union of Manitoba
and members of AIC, the statement, said.
