President Kufuor denounces rumpus over district capitals

Techiman (B/A), Feb. 28, Ghanadot/GNA– President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday denounced the rumpus over the location of district capitals of some newly districts and municipal assemblies.

He said it was unfortunate that the location of new district capitals was creating animosity among people for whose benefit the districts were created.

Speaking at the inauguration of Ghana Nuts Limited, an export processing company in Techiman, President Kufuor said the main rationale for the establishment of the new districts was to improve administration, deepen democracy and good governance.

In addition, it was meant to promote equitable distribution of the “national cake.”

President Kufuor called on the chiefs and people in those areas to accept the decision taken by Government in establishing the new district assemblies and co-operate for rapid development of the areas.

The President said the country needed absolute peace for development, pointing out that socio-economic progress could not take place in an atmosphere of violence and chaos.

President Kufuor said “I therefore wish to appeal to people in areas where currently there is breach of peace to lay down their arms and co-operate with the Government and security agencies and other stakeholders for peace to prevail.”

He encouraged Ghanaians to believe in the future prosperity of the nation adding “We have human, material and natural resources to make this country a great one”, he added.
