CPP project three billion dollars support for energy sector
Kumasi, April 12, Ghanadot/GNA - Dr. Paa
Kwesi Nduom, Presidential Candidate of the Convention
People's Party (CPP), has stated that the Party would
explore avenues to raise about three billion dollars to
support the sustainable development of the energy sector, if
he wins the 2008 elections.
He said his administration had projected to achieve this
objective by sourcing for funds from both domestic and
international sources, stressing however that, his Party
would only accept funds that were meant to advance the CPP's
agenda without changing its policy direction.
Dr. Nduom was speaking at a seminar in Kumasi organized by
Energy Centre and the Public Lectures Committee of the Kwame
Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for the
presidential candidates ahead of the 2008 elections.
Dubbed "Flagbearers on Energy", the seminar aimed at
providing a platform for each of the Presidential candidates
to present their ideas for energy sector development.
It was also to create a forum for lecturers, students and
the general public to gain an insight into the plans of the
flag bearers to establish energy policy frameworks and also
document their views on energy for easy reference in future.
Dr Nduom said the CPP would take advantage of the
implementation of the National Identification System (NIS)
and related tax collection improvement to provide
significant internally generated funds to help push forward
its agenda on energy.
In the area of oil and gas, Dr. Nduom who is a former
Minister of Energy, said his administration would step up
efforts to ensure effective participation of Ghanaians in
all areas both upstream and downstream in a bid to create
favourable atmosphere for communities in the areas close to
oil and gas production to be redeveloped, using modern
planning methods and global standards.
This, he said, will allow the communities to benefit
directly from their proximity to enable them to protect the
oil and gas assets whiles forestalling the Niger Delta
experience in Nigeria.
Dr. Nduom stated that his Party would develop further the
Atomic Energy capabilities for peaceful and economic
purposes as an essential factor in national development.
Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice Chancellor of KNUST,
expressed the hope that presidential candidates would put
into practice their visions when given the mandate to help
make energy crisis a thing of the past.
