Ghana’s Kufuor to honour democratic
tradition

All things being equal, Ghana’s President John Kufuor is on
course to show the world that Africa still has credible
leaders when he bows out of office peacefully in January
2009 after the presidential and general elections scheduled
for December 7.
President Kufuor announced his plans to retire to African
leaders during the just-ended AU Summit in Egypt. This is
significant in one way; with just six months more left for
him he has been bold to give the indication that he was
ready to go.
Before going to Egypt, President Kufuor had said, “the
Electoral Commission would be provided all the assistance it
needs to organise credible elections.”
Unfortunately for him, all does not look well around the
country and there are indications that any of the trouble
spots could explode into full blown fighting and possibly
mar the presidential and general elections. ....
