Fake doctor in police grips

Aflao, Sept. 29 GNA -Richard Brown Afful 27, who posed as a medical practitioner, trained at the University of Ghana Medical School, has been arrested by the Police at Aflao.

Afful, native of Apam, in the Central Region, operated under the name; Dr. Richard D. Manneh, with two second class upper certificates, one issued on July 27, 2001 qualifying him in medicine.

The second certificate; that of a surgeon was dated July 20, 2004.

Mr. Ahmed Yakubu, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in charge of Aflao Police told the Ghana New Agency that the suspect used those documents to secure a job with an Aflao Hospital about three weeks ago as a medical practitioner.
He said the hospital management only a few days after employing him doubted the professional proficiency of Afful and sought verification from the University of Ghana Medical School.

Mr. Yakubu said this led to the revelation that the suspect's registration number as a doctor belonged to a graduate of the medical school, Dr. Richard Kwame Mannah who passed out on September 15, 2006 and was currently doing his Housemanship at the Korlebu Teaching Hospital.

He said upon his arrest the suspect gave his real name and admitted the certificates were forged for him by a man he said now lives in the United Kingdom but whose name he could not recollect.

Mr. Yakubu said the suspect told the Police that he was looking for employment to raise funds to enable him begin an educational programme in fulfillment of his dream of becoming a medical doctor.

He said the suspect would be charged for impersonation, false assumption of professional title and forgery.
