 President Kufuor in an accident

Accra, Nov. 14, Ghanadot - It is what some are calling a narrow miss for the president as he escaped unhurt when his car was hit this morning by another while he was on his way to his office.

The accident happened on the airport road, between the Accra International Airport junction and the 37 Military Hospital.

The President was immediately rushed to the hospital. He has later been reported unhurt and is back at his desk in the castle, a source told Ghanadot.

Some are beginning to wonder whether the accident was an assassination attempt. They say it is very rare for a presidential motorcade to be struck in the manner the accident happened.

The suspect, the driver of the other car, is under arrest and has been detained for questioning.

Eye witnesses say the suspect was driving a Mercedes, described as a
blue black Mercedes benz elegance saloon car,  which came from the opposite direction to ram the president’s vehicle on the side. The President’s car rolled over several times before coming to a stop.

The President was helped out of his rammed car by witnesses on the scene.

According to Presidential Press Secretary Andrew Awuni, it is not clear yet as to why the accident happened in the manner it did.

“It's a bit strange for this car to run into his car directly the way it did," the Press Secretary said.

He also reported to the press that some members of the president’s entourage have been seriously hurt are receiving medical attention at the 37 Military Hospital.

The nation is shocked with disbelief about the manner the accident happened. The Information Minister Oboshie Sai-Cofie has informed the press that all is well with the President and that investigations are underway to understand fully what happened.
