Sub-Saharan Africa
January 23th, 2012(Lagos, Nigeria): The Initiative for
Public Policy Analysis (IPPA), the 2005 award-winning
organization, has been ranked among Top-30 think tanks in
Sub Saharan Africa, according to the 2011 Global Go-To think
tank ranking report released on January 18, 2012 by the
United Nations University and the University of
Pennsylvania.
This ranking marks the third time that IPPA would be ranked
among Top 30 think tank in Sub-Saharan Africa. The first was
in 2008 and the second was in 2010.
The ranking whose primary objective is to recognize some of
the leading public policy think tanks in the world and
highlight the important contributions these organizations
are making to governments and civil societies around the
world is conducted by a special program jointly set up by
the two globally renowned institutions. This is based on a
worldwide
survey of 6,545 policy research organisations.
A panel of experts totaling 1,500 comprising scholars,
journalists,
policymakers and peers from 120 countries participated in
the ranking process. Nominated think tanks were assessed
based on criteria like the rigour and relevance of their
research, ability to work with media and the breadth of the
audience they reach and their cumulative impact on public
policy.
“This ranking is thrilling and is a reward for our effort at
informing
sound policy. We are happy IPPA impact is been noted. We
will keep on putting our best to impact the myriad of policy
issues undermining development in the country”. says
Thompson Ayodele, executive director of the Initiative for
Public Policy Analysis.
Olusegun Sotola, a Research Fellow with the IPPA, also
welcome this ranking. “This ranking is a validation of IPPA
impact on policy debates in Nigeria. Being among the best
repeatedly gives us some confidence on our activity and it
is also an indication that we are on the right path. While
we enjoy the joys of this ranking, we also understand the
expectation that comes with it. ”
The 2011 Global Go-To Think Tank Ranking is compiled by the
Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the International
Relations Program, University of Pennsylvania. Started in
2006, these annual reports seek to evaluate performance and
to identify leading think tanks throughout the world.
The Initiative for Public Policy Analysis is a research and
advocacy driven organisation that works to influence public
policy by focusing on principles and institutions underlying
free and open society, and promoting conditions favourable
