NPP congratulates NDC
By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, has congratulated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a successful congress over the weekend.

He said the success of the congress indicated that the party's democracy is growing.

The ruling NDC held its eighth National Delegates' Congress last weekend which ended peacefully despite various predictions of violence by a section of Ghanaians, including party members and those in opposition.

The congress saw the election of a mixed bag of so-called pro-Rawlings and pro-Mills loyalists to man the affairs of the party for the next four years.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, wife of former president Rawlings, won the first vice-chairmanship position by about 1,433 out of 1900 voters.

Other so-called Rawlings loyalists such as Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, and Alhaji Saeed Sinare won vice-chair positions. Kofi Poturphy and Danny Annan also won the remaining two vice-chairmanship slots to complete the set of six vice-chairmen.

Pro-Mills Dr Kwabena Adjei and Johnson Asiedu Nketia (General Mosquito) retained their Chairman and General Secretary positions respectively.

According to Nana Ohene Ntow, the NDC should not begrudge anyone for expressing misgivings ahead of the congress because such people had enough grounds to do so judging from the history of the party.

He was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Monday.

Asked whether he and the NPP were disappointed that things went well for their opponents during the congress, Nana Ntow asked host Shamima Moslem “Why should I be? He added that one “cannot wish his political opponent gets ill all the time.”

The NPP General Secretary noted that he had called Mr Asiedu Nketia prior to the congress to wish him well and again called to congratulate him upon retaining his position.
