Accra Hosts African Union Summit
By Gideon Sackitey, Accra

Accra, June 30, Ghanadot - About 40 African head of states are scheduled to attend this weekend’s African Union Summit to discuss plans for a United States of Africa designed to break down the colonial borders and make people of Africa and African descent not only one people, but also from a single country.

They include Presidents Abdelaziz Boutaflika of Algeria, Eduardo Dos SantosAngola, Thomas Boni of Benin, Cape Verde’s Pedro Pires and Francoise Bozize of te Central African Republic. The rest are Cote d’Ivoire’s Laurent Gbagbo, Ismaail Guella of Djibouti, Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia and Obiang Nbasango of Equatorial Guinea.

Newly sworn in Umary Musa Yar’dua of Nigeria, Mrs Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Amadou Toure of Mali, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Thabo Mbeki of South Africa and King Mswati of Swaziland.\ and Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania would be present.

The leaders, who started arriving in Accra on Friday are set to address the agenda of a “united Africa" proposed by Dr Kwame Nkrumah some forty plus years ago. The idea has been welcomed by many several years ago, but the willingness to carry it out has not been forthcoming, making the idea of a borderless continent-wide entity a mere slogan.

A 2006 African Union (AU) report advocates achieving a United States of Africa by 2015 with the AU transforming into a government.
A number of current crop of leaders are advocating for a United States of Africa now with Libya’s Muammar Ghaddafi, leading the way for an immediate pan-African government.

A number of seminars, workshops and civil society incursions prior to July 1st Summit indicate that there is a strong need for a United African government.

Mr Alpha Oumar Konare, the departing chair of the African Union Commission is disturbed about the situation saying that said numerous documents had been adopted over the several decades calling for a pan-African body, which had failed.

Several people have expressed worry about the situation in Darfur, Zimbabwe and other African states where human rights, good governance and freedom of speech are a far cry from home.

Ghanaian police authorities have banned all protests during the Summit, having spread out about 2,000 policemen across the capital. capital.

Planned protests include one calling for an end to the violence in Darfur and a second by Zimbabwean activists decrying Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

On the sidelines of the summit, South African President Thabo Mbeki is expected to present a report on the progress of his attempt to mediate a solution in Zimbabwe.
