Most fans call against a local coach to handle Black Stars
Sunyani, (B/A) June 20, Ghanadot/GNA
- A cross-section of football enthusiasts in Sunyani, the
Brong Ahafo regional capital have called on the Ghana
Football Association (GFA) not to engage a local coach to
lead the senior national
team, the Black Stars following its 2-0 defeat to the Azingo
Nationale of Gabon in the on-going African Cup of
Nations/World Cup qualifiers.
Most of the interviewees expressed total disappointment
about the performance and the conduct of the team and
attributed its defeat to technical bankruptcy as well as
complacency on the side of the players.
Mr Nyamekye Marfo, a sports presenter at Ark FM, a private
radio station in Sunyani told the GNA Sports that he was of
the view that local coaches should be engaged as assistants
and that GFA must appoint a well competent foreign coach to
succeed Coach Claude Le Roy who resigned his position a
month ago.
“The Black Stars always do not perform up to expectation at
the start of every Nation’s Cup qualifiers but later
struggle to secure points” he noted adding “it will take a
good and veteran coach to reverse such a trend”.
Mr Marfo said that lack of respect by the players to local
coaches was a major problem that impedes the performance of
the national team.
Mr Edward E. Wilson, Brong-Ahafo Regional Sports Development
Officer, however commended the performance of Coach Sillas
Tetteh and the Black Stars for their impressive display in
winning two out of the three matches played so far.
He urged the players not to be complacent but to remain
focused on the matches ahead of them so as to secure the
Nation the opportunity to participate in both the African
and the World Cup tournaments.
Mr Wilson called on soccer fans to desist from putting
unnecessary pressure on the players but rather encourage
them to demonstrate flexibility on the field of play to
enable them win their remaining matches.
He pledged the support of the Sports Council for any
competent coach who would be engaged by the GFA.
Mr Wilson expressed the optimism that the national team was
capable of playing up to expectation in their return
encounter with Azingo Nationale of Gabon at the Ohene Djan
Stadium, Accra on Sunday June 22.
