Knockout Championships to precede 2nd GAABA League

Accra, Oct. 6, Ghanadot/GNA - A special knockout championships is to be organised to precede the second edition of the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) League, which is expected to commence next month.

The knockout championships will see registered boxers battling among themselves with the eventual winner declared in every weight category.

Gideon Quartey, Vice-Chairman of the Association, who revealed this to GNA Sports last Friday, said this is part of the efforts of the Association to keep the boxers in top shape for future assignments.

He said that a date will soon be announced for the championships, the first of its kind on the local boxing calendar which would be followed by an official launching of the second edition of the league.

Meanwhile, the seventh edition of the weekly contest organised by the Regional Association came off last Friday at the Prisons Canteen, Cantonments in Accra.

Ebo Electric of Ashaiman Gym emerged the hero of the evening when he "electrocuted" William Nekasem of the Fit Square Gym within 120 seconds of the first round during their Welterweight contest.

The well built Ebo unsettled Nekasem with series of punches in the opening seconds, which compelled the referee to stop the bout after the latter's second knockdown amidst chants from the thick crowd.

Emmanuel Quarshie of Attoh Quarshie Gym outclassed Francis Quarshie of Star High Gym also in the Welterweight division.

In the Featherweight division, Panix Gym's Joshua Barnor overpowered Joshua Addy of Attoh Quarshie Gym, while Bright Ayala of Wisdom Gym also succumbed to Isaac Sackey of Attoh Quarshie Gym.

Raymond Commey of Square Deal Gym silenced the fans' favourite, Odoi Yemofio of De-Oaks Gym while Fit Square's Nii Ofoli Tetteh also handed a similar feat to Mike Annani, also of De-Oaks Gym.

Attoh Quarshie's Charles Stella however triumphed over Yakubu Dawuda of Bukom Gym while Tahidu Akurugu Atoa crowned his debut with a sweet victory over fellow debutant, Samuel Afoli of Ultimate Gym in the Middleweight class.

In the Lightweight division, Attoh Quarshie's duo of Offei Dodoo and Akuetteh Aryee emerged victors over Azumah Alanri and Bismark Donkor of Ultimate and Ashaiman Gyms respectively.

Will Power's Ben Lamptey defeated "The Pride of Ashaiman" Felix Agbozo in their Light welterweight contest with Duke Micah reigning supreme over Jesse Lartey in an-all Fit Square Gym affair in the Light flyweight division.
